Wood fibre insulation is a natural, vapour‑permeable thermal and acoustic insulation material manufactured from softwood residues such as sawdust, chips and offcuts from timber processing. It is available as rigid boards, semi‑rigid panels, flexible batts, and loose‑fill, making it suitable for roofs, walls, floors and external insulation systems. Unlike synthetic foams, wood fibre interacts dynamically with moisture and heat. Its hygroscopic behaviour allows it to absorb and release moisture, regulating indoor humidity and reducing condensation risk. Combined with high vapour permeability, it supports breathable building envelopes, especially when paired with lime, clay or vapour‑open membranes.
Wood fibre insulation also provides excellent summer heat protection due to its high density and thermal inertia, along with strong acoustic performance, often reducing noise by 36–50 dB depending on product type. Modern products are formaldehyde‑free, safe to handle, and manufactured from FSC/PEFC‑certified softwood using natural binders and water‑repellent additives.
